LUCINDA LOOKED AT THE CLOCK. It was time to leave to meet René. She closed the book she was reading and went to her dressing table. She dabbed the lily of the valley perfume that René had given her on her wrist and behind her ears, then arranged her straw hat on her head. She was anticipating a sunny day surrounded by bluebells. Smiling at her reflection in the mirror, she noted her complexion looked healthier. Her grandfather was right: getting outdoors had been good.

Lucinda decided to peek in on him on her way out and made her way to his wing of the house. When she turned into the hallway to her grandfather’s suite, her former governess was there with Dr. Charles; they were talking in low voices. Lucinda halted as a foggy memory surfaced. Miss Meadows had been standing there with him. Mitch. Drinking sherry and whispering intimately. A brief feeling of hatred for them both arose from the depth of her being. She stared at Charles. No, that’s not Mitch. You’re confused again. Not wanting to confront them, Lucinda was about to retreat when the tall, blond doctor noticed her.

“Hello, Miss Haliburton, I was hoping to see you today. Lady Haliburton was just telling me that you have been getting outdoors and spending less time in the library.” Dr. Charles never referred to it as the Egyptian room.

Lucinda nodded. “Yes. As a matter of fact, I was just on my way out.” Then she looked at Miss Meadows. I will never, ever address you as Lady Haliburton. “Tell my grandfather that I will visit him later. Thank you.” Without waiting for a reply, Lucinda turned to go.

“Wait,” Dr. Charles said, “I was just leaving. I shall walk you out.” He said goodbye to Lady Haliburton and added, “Tell Lord Roderick that I shall be in touch.” Putting his hat on his head, he strode over to Lucinda. “Shall we?”

Lucinda couldn’t refuse; it would be unseemly. Besides, the eagle eye of Miss Meadows was on her. “Certainly.”

When they arrived outdoors, Charles escorted her down to the trail near the stable. He looked at the cabriolet waiting for him and then suggested that he first take a walk with her. She politely declined his offer, but at his rejected look, she tarried for a few minutes to assure him that she just needed time alone in nature. Wasn’t that his recommendation?
